MMM! Homemade Hot Cocoa

MMM! Homemade Hot Cocoa

A warming cup of hot cocoa in a special mug can really sweeten a gloomy day. While you could reach for a packaged mix, there's something satisfying about making it from scratch. Not only does it taste richer, but you also have control over the ingredients.

I discovered this simple process of making hot cocoa when I was young, and now my daughter is happily carrying on the tradition! Here, I share our go-to recipe so that you can enjoy a delicious and comforting treat, too.

Hot Cocoa for One

  • 1 T. cocoa
  • 2 T. sugar
  • 2 T. milk
  • 1 c. boiling water or hot milk, or enough to top up the mug

1. Stir the cocoa powder and sugar together in a mug. Have a kettle of boiling water on hand or milk warmed in a heat-proof measuring cup in the microwave.

2. Whisk a couple of tablespoons of milk into the cocoa and sugar to make a chocolatey paste.

3. Pour in boiling water or heated milk into the mug while stirring to combine.

Customize it!

While the basic recipe for hot cocoa is delicious on its own, you can also get creative and customize it to your taste. Here are a few ideas:

Classic: Top with marshmallows or whipped cream and a sprinkle of cocoa powder for an extra touch.

Cozy: Add a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg with the cocoa powder.

Vegan: Try plant milk, such as almond milk or coconut milk, for a dairy-free option.

Spiked: Add a splash of your favourite liqueur, such as peppermint schnapps or Baileys Irish Cream.

Decadent: Drizzle with some caramel sauce or add a tiny splash of vanilla extract.

Minty: Use a peppermint stick as a stir-stick or add a drop of peppermint extract.

Now that you know how to make hot cocoa from scratch, it's time to grab your favourite mug and cozy up. Enjoy!

Michela, thank you for the kind compliment. :) This weekend should be a good chilly one to indulge!

Thanks, Anne! We make homemade cocoa all the time, but I never thought of making the paste first and adding the hot (non-dairy) milk afterward. Definitely trying this next time! And love the gorgeous mugs!
